Ballet Tucson presents their SPRING CONCERT
March 24-26, 2023 | Friday 7 pm, Saturday & Sunday 2 pm
Leo Rich Theater | 260 S Church, Tucson
FIRST LIGHT | Ballet Tucson premiere
Choreography by Price Suddarth
Music by Carly Comando
First Light is a high energy ensemble work focusing on speed, strength, and most of all the freshness of a new day. Much like the dawn— when everything is still before us— the dancers tear open the space with abandon. Through the journey of the piece we experience joy, challenge, and heartache…all the components of a beautiful complex day, and ultimately life. The dancers elegantly and seamlessly knit these varied arcs together with power and finesse, reminding us that our lives are more than any singular moment.
WALPURGISNACHT BALLET
Choreography by George Balanchine
Music by Charles Gounod (from Faust)
Walpurgisnacht Ballet was choreographed for a 1975 production of Faust by the Théâtre National de l’Opéra, danced by the Paris Opera Ballet. The New York City Ballet premiere was the first presentation of the choreography as an independent work. The Walpurgisnacht scene occurs at the beginning of the opera’s last act, when Mephistopheles brings Faust to watch the traditional celebration on the eve of May Day when the souls of the dead are released to wander at will. Although the ballet does not depict Walpurgisnacht per se, it does build on a sense of joyful revelry.
Presented with permission by the George Balanchine Trust.
JOPLIN
Choreography by Mark Schneider
Mark Schneider has long been a favorite choreographer of Ballet Tucson audiences. His delightfully charming and vivacious Joplin creates the perfect combination of ballet and jazz. This “Broadway Ballet” is Schneider’s homage to the King of Ragtime Scott Joplin and brings a joyful conclusion to our 37th season.
BOSSA NOVA |
Choreography by Chieko Imada
Love and laughter abound in this comedic work for five dancers by Resident Choreogrpaher Chieko Imada. Set in a 1950s Bossa Nova lounge, new connections lead to great confusion and great romance. We look forward to bringing this crowd-pleasing piece back to the stage!
FOOTPRINTS AT THE FOX PREMIERE | Winning Choreographer Brooke Amundrud
This season’s winning work of our Footprints at the Fox performance will appear in our Spring Concert.
“Exile’s Jig” | Our audience voted “Exile’s Jig” their favorite piece of the evening. Brooke, a Ballet Tucson Senior Apprentice, created the powerful and compelling work that you will now have the opportunity to see on the main stage as part of our Spring Concert at the Leo Rich Theater
