The ASU Gammage BEYOND series is proud to welcome Camille A. Brown and Dancers on Monday, March 21st and Tuesday, March 22nd and from April 11 – 16th. While they are at ASU, they will be conducting residency activities on and off campus. During Camille’s time here, she is interested in working with dancers and non-dancers leading workshops that assist in people finding their individual story through social dance and dialogue around, race, gender and history. As part of ASU Gammage BEYOND series, we work to connect our visiting artists to the surrounding community through such workshops, lectures and conversations.
BIO: Camille has been making headlines with the success of her performance BLACK GIRL- Linguistic Play This performance depicts the complexities of carving out a positive identity as a Black female in urban American culture. In a world where Black women are often only portrayed in terms of their strength, resiliency, or trauma, this work seeks to represent a fuller spectrum of the Black female and the complexity of negotiating themselves in this racially and politically charged world. Camille A. Brown is a prolific choreographer who has achieved multiple accolades and awards for her daring works. She is a Bessie Award Winner, USA Jay Franke & David Herro Fellow, 2015 Doris Duke Artist Award recipient, 2015 TED Fellow, two-time Princess Grace Award recipient and much, much more.
