Tanya and Thaddeus of Dance Theatre of Harlem will lead this FREE dance workshop for dancers and non-dancers, sponsored by ASU Gammage.
Workshop details: Movement workshops are suitable for able-bodied people with little or no previous training in dance. The workshop includes a warm-up that uses ballet-based exercises that focus on stretching, strengthening, placement, coordination, agility, and musicality as well as an exploration of dance themes and phrases that are developed into across-the-floor movement combinations. When possible, the class will incorporate both live accompaniment and popular music.
Dance Instructors: Thaddeus and Tanya have an extensive history with DTH, stretching back to the mid-’90s when both were dancers in the company. Formed by legendary dancer Arthur Mitchell in 1969 as a means of challenging the stereotype that African-Americans had no place in the world of ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem went on to become an important ambassador for the art, inspiring dance enthusiasts throughout the world. Financial pressures forced a hiatus of the professional company in 2004, but a few years later Artistic Director Virginia Johnson, herself a famed former principal dancer for the company, announced a plan to bring back the professional company by 2013. In 2011, Thaddeus and Tanya were commissioned to develop new work for “Harlem Dance Works 2.0,” a series of dance laboratories designed to bring new choreographic energy and interest to the emerging new company. Dance Theater of Harlem continues to strives thanks to Thaddeus and Tanya tremendous contribution.
