ALSENY BANGOURA is a dancer, choreographer, singer, and musician from Conakry–the capital of Guinea, located on the coast of the Great Horn of West Africa. His tribe, the Susu, is one of 24 tribes in Guinea and is part of a larger Mande ethnic group that Anthropologists say date back at least 800 years. Alseny grew up in this region, steeped in rich cultural history, immersed in traditional music and dance. In 2003, Alseny began his professional studies in Guinea at Tinafan, a UNICEF-supported school for circus arts. He studied there for six years and has three diplomas, one in acrobatics, another in dance and music, and the third in education. He specializes in all types of acrobatics as well as traditional West African dance, the Dun-Dun and Djembe drums, and the West African flute. Alseny has performed and taught with Tinafan, but it was his work with Kalabante, a dance group, that lead to his discovery in 2011 by talent scouts with Cavalia, a performing arts production company based in Montreal, Canada. Alseny exercises his many talents, rooted in his African cultural upbringing, by performing with Cavalia’s Odysseyo as an acrobat, dancer, drummer, and singer. His career has taken him all over the world to countries that include Cambodia, France, Mexico, Canada, as well as here in the United States in Miami, Atlanta, Phoenix, and Boston.
